Don't the true artists break rules?
They recognize the mold and are willing to step out of the mold.
Flexiblility, choices, openness to new thoughts and ideas...NOT being a
follower...an artist is a leader but never a dictator...an artist is willing
to visit old territories, explore new territory, take risks, combine,
reorganize, FEEL.... then provide the new vision for humankind to see.
It's a challenge for the teacher.

Maybe this student needs an independent study with flexibility and
choices... some might call this rewarding bad behavior, but you might find
that this actually gives him new incentive to do some really creative work.
And you may also see some of your lesson plan material appearing in his
work. Good luck!
