In Winston-Salem we fought this issue several years ago when all middle
school electives were being forced into the mold of exploratory
rotations. What we did was propose to go along with an equalized
rotation at the sixth grade ( this wheel and time ratio seems to change
yearly...it is currently a 7 week rotation), a quarter course at the 7th
grade ( they can take one or two different quarter courses, 2-D or Mixed
Media); a semester course at the 8th grade (they can take one or two
different semester courses, 2-D or Mixed Media). We divided the
courses in half by the content delivered, to relieve the stress of
having to cover everything in a short span of time. The 2-D courses are
based on drawing, painting, printmaking, and crayon techniques. The
Mixed Media courses cover fine craft areas, sculpture, collage, and
crayon techiques. This proposal met reality and has worked well for us
over the last 5 years. In addition, we continue to approach the
curriculum through DBAE as we have for many years.
