I find that there are those who like messes and those who can't stand
them. One of my more memorable days was when I decided to give my 200
14yr. olds and assignment of squirting tempera paint all over the tables
and scratching, smearing, blobbing, folding. rubbing etc, etc, and then
making monoprints of it. It was absolutely wonderful for about the first
3 periods, then it began to catch up with us. The room was saturated
with 18x24"soggy papers-- the humidity was about 100%, it didn't seem
possible to get it cleaned up any more before the next onslaught of
kids. By the end of the day my students didn't even want to come in
because they had seen soo many of their peers splotched with paint. I
haven't tried that idea since, but we did get some interesting work. I
am sloppy and love messes--as long as they clean up after them, but I
have some students who are very talented who hate my sloppy style. I try
to give them some right to stay clean and tidy and protect them from the
rest of us.
