One of the sweetest experiences I have had teaching art took place many
years ago. I was teaching second graders a very simple lesson dealing with
color. We looked at the color wheel and were discussing warm and cool
colors. As we discussed the colors we would relate it to things they knew
about in the real world. After several lessons discussing this I decided to
question them on what they knew. I asked if anyone could give me an
example of a warm color. One of my girls said ORANGE. I think ORANGE is a
warm color because it is the color of the sun. The sun is warm. Good I told
her. Then one of my little boys excitedly raised his hand. When I called
on him he said BLUE. Surprised at this answer I asked him why he had
said that BLUE was a warm color. "Well, he said, when I wait for the
school bus on cold winter mornings my Mother comes to the bus stop with me
and she wraps her coat around me to keep me warm." I said "AND?" He
replied, "My Mother's coat is BLUE!"
