It's heartbreaking to see kids destroy their work. I don't know what their issues are--did
they not feel they had a stake in the lesson somehow? Was the lesson too "happy hands" and of
no value to them? When I gave back work, I made it clear it had to go home (but I knew that
trying to get parents to sign something to the effect they saw it was useless). I told the
students the janitors would bring me back any artwork they found in the trash, and I would
lower their grades. It's true, some of the janitors would bring me stuff they'd found.
