[teacherartexchange] Tile Mural

---------

We did a tile mural at our school, and what we used was the underglaze that looks like a box of watercolors. Not all of the colors were very bright, but the students were doing tiles about the Holocaust, and were not attempting bright colors, so they might get be bright if you put them on heavy.

The background of the tile is not true white unless you paint it white first, but the colors paint very well. I can't speak of the long term or how it would hold up in the sun. For a very reasonable price we bought a gallon of clear glaze at the local paint your own pottery place. I put it in baking dishes and dipped the front of the tiles, and students wiped the edges with sponges.

The only thing I would warn about is not to put the glaze on after painting until they are very dry because they will run. I was in a hurry (we put things off too long), dipped too soon, and I ruined a couple.

While it is much more expensive, to ensure bright colors you can go with majolica glaze that you put white glaze on first, and then the colors on top. That does not need a clear glaze on top, I don't think.

Best of luck.

Dear ArtsEdNet Folks,
This past week I was in Vranje, the southernmost city in Serbia. Here
I attended the opening of my art show on Wednesday. After that, my
friend Pat and I explored Vranje, including its Turkish Ottoman
architecture, Roma (gypsy) quarter, quaint narrow streets, and an 11th
century fortress.
You will find photos on my website (http://web.mac.com/melissaenderle/Melissa_Enderle_Travel_Journeys/Vranje.html
) and writing on my travelblog (http://melissaenderle.blogspot.com/).
To make things easier to read, I have broken the writing into four
parts, the first of which is published today. The others will follow
in the following days.

On my blog for Sunday 5/4/08:
http://www.taospaint.com/WoodysBlog08/May.html
I posted links to small movies of demos by the instructor I had for
the figure drawing drawing class I've been taking. I also posted
a link to an interview with a wonderful painter of figures who has
work in our Spring Watercolor Exhibition.
                                        Enjoy, Woody

I read this digest daily, but today is my first post.
I was awarded a $2100 grant from the local utility
company in Albuquerque for equipment and supplies for
a PMC silver jewelry class next year at the charter
school where I teach. The students are all from lower
income families and many are not eligible to return to
the public school system so, needless to say, I am
thrilled to be able to offer this type of class.

Wonderful - and in Albuquerque, my home town. Silver smithing
is not my thing but if I can help in anyway just let me know.

Some time ago someone posted an example of a video based on Adobe Kid's
"Dog's Eye View". The example shared on this site was much better than the
ones I am finding posted on the net. Anyone remember this video? I would
love to share it with my class tomorrow. TIA!

I would like to put a tile mural outside in the courtyard at my
school. I already have the tiles, I just need to buy the glaze that
has bright bold colors. I was wondering if any of you knew the best
glaze to use so it will not fade in the Vegas sun and heat? Any other
tips to help get me started? TIA
