Is there interest in developing a Drawing ideas page on Incredible Art
Department?
NO lesson plans are needed - just media approaches/techniques. Include
a sample if you have one (but even that is not necessary as it is best
for folks to experiment make their own).

Mark Anderson sent me his version of using masking tape (to block out
areas).

From Mark:

I've used the tape thing a couple of times, but usually not as a
single medium...normally I use it as a means to an end, one of several
media added over the course of a couple class periods.

Here's what I do: To explore the effects of various media and how
those media affect each other I will start a "nonsense" design by
taking three markers and scribbling for, say ten seconds. Each space
will be filled with a different mix of watercolor. Next block I'll add
to the paper, this time laying down masking tape (making sure to
"pre-stick" it to blue jeans to take of the bulk of the tackiness) and
using chalk or oil pastel on top of the previous color work (and then
pulling up the tape at the end of the block to reveal untouched
colors. A third block will introduce yet another medium to be worked
over the previous block's color application and masking colors with,
say, wax sticks. This allows my kids to see what happens by combining
colors -- both "good" and "bad" results. I may vary the order of color
media application from what I did in first hour to a different medium
in second or third hour classes just to point out differences in the
order of application.

An elementary version of this idea appears in Primary Art by MaryAnn Kohl.

I saw this idea first in early 1980s - a drawing prof art OSU was
using it with students on a large scale (full sheet rag paper -
building up layers with pencils). The finished work was quite striking
and had great depth.

Post your ideas to the list - maybe change subject heading to "Drawing
ideas - media approaches". This will be a multi age page. The page
will also cross reference several lessons on IAD - and will feature
Ken Schwab's and Robert Capitolo's book "Drawing Course 101". No
promises as to how soon I will compile everything for the site.

If you have images - send those to me OFF list (address on IAD or use
this gmail or Road Runner - I check all three each day).
