Have you tried the Prismacolor Art Stix? They are pricey, but I try to
purchase a few boxes each year to build up my supply. They are a stick
form of colored pencil, kinda like a conte crayon. The colors are
great. Unfortunately, they are thicker so don't do well for detailed
work.

I have a problem with Crayola colored pencils also. I have a very good
electric pencil sharpener and it seems that their leads are often off
center, making them impossible to sharpen. ugh! Who buys other sorts? I
love the soft leads also.
