Red Grooms Lesson Ideas-THANKS!

You guys are wonderful. Thank you for taking time out of your busy
end-of-the-year day to e'mail me great ideas. Tell me your thoughts on this:

The Grooms exhibit is going to feature artwork (I'm imagining sketches, but
I could be wrong) for his Fox Trot Carousel that he created for the
Nashville waterfront. I believe he even created some mock carousels to give
to the person that cast the actual carousel car. I thought it would be neat
if my students were given the chance to create a paper mache carousel. I was
thinking of giving them a dowel drilled into a block of wood, create a foil
armature, wrap with paper mache and paint. For display, the whole class
could assemble their carousels together on a Lazy Susan to form a complete

My questions now are:
Have any of you ever tried such a thing?
What do you think are the best paper mache methods, recipes, etc.?
