deceased had a problem with alcohol. It didn't look like much - just bare
branches with bottles tied to it.

I think the overlapping boards you are referring to are called lap boards.
That's just a guess. There are interesting clues in architecture, like
ornaments over doors and under gables, bird houses, picket fences and so on.
Not just red lights.
