MH/DD Art Lessons

Date: Tue May 27 2003 - 16:59:03 PDT

I teach at a middle school (9 years experience) with a large special needs
population. Next year I have the opportunity to teach a class of all MH/DD
students. I'm looking forward to the experience (aides are coming with the
students) but I need help designing this curriculum. Does anyone have tips? I've had
these students mixed in with my "regular" kids (and will continue to do so),
but having them all together will give me the opportunity to really gear lessons
to meet their needs and I want to do a great job. I'm trying to find my "Very
Special Artist Handbook". Are there any other good books out there?

Some background:
Most students can use drawing tools, brushes, scissors, etc.
Fine motor skill is usually poor.
Very few can read higher than kindergarten/1st grade level, if that.
My students not only have a mental disability, but often other disabilities
as well, including sight and hearing problems.
Many are highly verbal.

Thanks for any help.
