Hi everyone,
Counting down.... here are some interesting items:
1. Three ideas about education.
2. Higher pay in Connecticut and how it is working out.
3. Mentoring new teachers is inadequate..
4. The website for National Board Certification
5. A bunch of jobs - Illinois and other states (I shrunk these to cut down
on size - expand them so you can read them)
7. Two books for new teachers (and veterans).
I hope things are not too hectic for you as the school year winds down.
The next Bits & Pieces will be about the conference and hotel for those of
you who have requested info so you can include conference costs in your
budget for next year. Watch for it.
Marge

An Interesting Article about education:
..thinking about education during this century has almost entirely involved
just three ideas -- socialization, Plato's academic idea, and Rousseau's
developmental idea. We may see why education is so difficult and
contentious if we examine these three ideas and the ways they interact in
educational thinking today. Kieran Egan considers these ideas and their role
in current debates in Why Education is So Difficult and Contentious Go to

Connecticut: Higher Pay, Higher Standards
Connecticut's 1986 Education Enhancement Act propelled the state's teacher
pay to first in the nation, raising certification standards at the same time
- and creating a statewide impetus on the arts. What happened next?
<http://www.glef.org/connecticut.html> (note: this article does not discuss
the arts other than to mention the "statewide impetus" but the article in
interesting because of its discussion of the attempt to establish higher
salaries and rank teachers.)

Research indicates new teachers could benefit from more mentoring
A study found that new teachers often are hired after the start of the
school year and are burdened with a heavy workload without sufficient
mentorship. The findings suggest that schools should focus on mentoring new
teachers and not purely on recruitment and retention strategies.
