I had a student teacher my third year. I've only taught art for five years. I
only did it because the student was a friend of mine and my age. She already
was experienced in teaching at a private studio. I've declined every other
year. It makes me anxious to have another teacher in the room all the time
and I worry that I wouldn't quide a new teacher correctly. I did have a
student doing field work last fall. She came twice a week for about 4 hours.
That worked out great.
I think you have to decide what you can handle. Having a student teacher
canmean extra work for you, but it can be very rewarding. I especially loved
that my student teacher was hired by the district to teach high school that
next year. I've also mentored two new teachers. I feel the learning goes both
ways. Since I'm older, it was fun seeing new ideas and techniques right out
of the classroom. Good luck with your decision. Janet
