I volunteer occasionally for a hs art teacher that has block scheduling.
She gathered about 50 different items for them to draw: vases, bottles,
statues, old skeletons of cows, etc. They have to pick one item in each
category: cylinders, spheres, boxes, etc. and draw one with graduated
shadows. She also teaches them one and two point perspective. Also, they have
to draw an animal on land with shadows using colored pencils. They draw the
animal on manilla and once they have it right they trace the drawing with a
light table on to white sulphite drawing paper and complete it with colored
pencils. She buys only prismacolor colored pencils, but she is only allowed
to sharpen them in the electric pencil sharpener, the students will sharpen
them to the bone!
I know this seems harsh, but the classes run smoothly and there is a lot
of quiet time for them to do intensive drawing. On Fridays, the students are
allowed to move about the room and look at other people's drawings and
