Our elementary school has ISS (In School Suspension). It is in the book
room, they stuck a couple of desks in there (Our GT facilitator is in
another largish closet and we have 5 classes in portables - not good in
tornado alley). It is monitored by different aids and office staff
during the day. Younger students or kids who are emotional and acting
out because of problems at home sometimes get a time out in the AP's
office or the conference room.

My school has a tiny staff because we only have two classes at each
level. We don't have the budget for ISS, but we have some (this is my
principal's term) frequent fliers to the office. It seems the office is
too entertaining a place to be. The current plan calls for sending
another teacher's classroom as a step before writing an office referral,
this is not usually a great option for the classroom where the student
We are trying to figure out if it makes sense to establish a "Time-out"
established as this intermediate discipline step, but it will have to be
as 45 min to 1 hour blocks of different people's time, and we're
input from other campuses. Who serves in ISS and how is it working?
