I started out teaching part time in afterschool programs and summer day camps
for about 5 years. Then, finding myself suddenly single I needed full time
work and was encouraged by teachers I worked with during summer camp to get
certified via our state's alternate route program. ( I hold a BFA not an
education degree.) Anyway, after passing the Praxis and meeting all the
states requirements in Feb of 1999, I was hired for a part time position at a
new charter school for Sept. 1999. The following year the position grew to
full-time. I left after my second year there and I'm now at a middleschool
in a very large district...and I love it, and I'm looking forward to my next
year at this school. I'm not sure if the good fortune I have enjoyed in
finding positions is typical....maybe I was in the right place at the right
time.
