I do something like this as well with all elementary kids, but a little
different. I say "I believe the class can get all cleaned up by the time I
count to 10.....and then I start. They love the challenge! Sometimes I have
to add "half" numbers, but it works. Another thing I do at the start of
class is REFUSE to talk until the students are ALL looking and listening to
me. I don't talk loudly, but very softly say....."I get to make art ALL DAY,
but you only get to make art for 45 minutes today. When you waste time it is
a lot less time for you to make art." This ALWAYS quiets them down.
