Hi Friends,
I wanted to share something that happened in my class on Friday. I have a
student that requires medication daily. But on Friday he came to my class
very agitated. He said he had to go to his "sanctuary" ( the john). I told
him he knows the rules..."Give me five mins to set-up/explain/hand-out and
you can go"
He asks to go to the bathroom every day/every class. Anyway, I wasn't
telling him he couldn't go, just didn't want to have to repeat myself (That's
why I have the rule) kids are still coming in from the bell, he's still
standing in the middle of my room, I ask him to take his seat and he shouts
out "If you don't let me go to my sanctuary, I'm gonna pull a Columbine on
you"! You could've heard a pin drop. My heart was pounding. I pulled him
into the hallway and asked him if he was serious? He said as soon as the
words left his lips, he knew it was wrong. Of course I laid into him about
how could he even think that making light of that heinous act would help him
get his way? I was livid. We went back int to the class room and the kids
were just staring at us. I handed out their review sheets and asked them to
begin reading while I wrote something up. I had the student sit in his seat,
I took about three minutes to write down everything that was said and walked
him and my report to the office.
I found out today that he was expelled from school. We are a private school
and he won't be returning to take his finals or to attend next year.
I know we have a zero tolerance policy and I know he should be punished, but
it breaks my heart too.
Thanks for listening
Peace
Gabrielle
