This is a great question and so relevant to my questions about grading high
school students. On the one hand I want all the students to pass but on the
other hand I think it is unfair for certain students to keep me after school
the last week of school doing their artwork and unfair to the students who
get their work in ontime. Teachers in other classes don't extend assignment
due dates indefinately. I used to let the students borrow supplies and
finish up at home but either they don't return my supplies and even worse,
they often lose the artwork and then get a zero. And as was said by others,
an unfinished piece will get some credit by me. What I did this year was to
tell the students the projects from the earlier part of the semester were due
by progress report time and then I gave them an extra week later. I still
haven't come to terms in my own mind what to do about unfinished work and
allowing the students to finish it until the last minute. I'd be interested
in hearing from others, especially in the high school foundation/studio
classes. I don't know about all of you but grading is a chore for me. I
find it difficult at times to determine a grade. Isn't it so subjective? I
find that each of the three art teachers in my school grade differently.
What percentage do you all count for the actual artwork and what percentage
is for such things as class participation, effort, class conduct, etc. I
must admit that I give my grades based mainly on their work and give bonus
points for the other things. If a student doesn't work in class they get a
zero for that day and depending on how long that lasts, the zeros can affect
their grade. Thanks in advance for any feedback. EAC
