Thank you for all your comments.
I just wanted to explain how we in England work as it seems different to over
there in the States.
Although when I trained art was my main subject, I teach all subjects at
school. All those who teach children between the ages of 3 and 12 teach all
subjects and therefore are expected to display all subjects. This was what I
meant by the history of the culture of display. The emphasis over here is on
displaying English, maths and science work, but most of the others should
also be covered.
We don't have end of year art displays or teachers dedicated to teaching art
across the school. (This happens at secondary school 12-16yrs) Therefore
every teacher is expected to put up effective displays even if they are not
'visually minded.'
My concern is that display is becoming 'tokenised' as teachers who are
already under pressure to fulfill the National Curriculum are also expected
to display work across the curriculum and in most cases are not given any
training on how or why to do it. Does this bring my work into focus more
clearly?
Can you let me know if you work the same over there and if you don't what you
think about how we work? Your comments are really valuable to me.
Thanks. J.T.
