3-d large scale sculpture

Hi,
    I am planning to create a totem pole with 4th or 5th grade students in
which a group of 5 students builds one person or animal for the totem pole
out of cardboard. We would papier mache' each and connect it into a 9' tall
totem pole . Students would create a story about their totem pole before or
after it was created. I had planned just to papier mache' it and paint it,
but after reading the posts about using paper pulp made me think that there
might be some interesting alternatives to my original idea. Has anyone ever
worked on a similar project? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you.
