Congressional Art Competition

The Congressional Art Competition is sponsored by the Congressional Art
Caucus and coordinated by members of the United States House of
Representatives. Every year, each member of Congress is given the opportunity
to submit one piece of student artwork to hang in the Cannon Tunnel leading
to the United States Capitol Building.

The local art competition occurs in May. Each high school is permitted to
submit three pieces of artwork. Artwork must be two dimensional
(unfortunately, no sculptures or other three-dimensional art forms can be
accepted). Artwork should be matted as each piece allows. The winning piece,
which will be sent to Washington, DC, must be framed.

All entries are judged by a panel of experts carefully selected based upon
their knowledge of art and art education. In last year's competition, judges
came from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Academy of Design,
the Taft Museum, the Contemporary Arts Center, and the ACA College of Design.
The panel is responsible for establishing judging criteria and selecting the
winning entry as well as two runners-up.

Congressman Chabot holds a reception in his district office each year to
recognize the talents of all the artists who entered the competition. This is
an opportunity for the Congressman to meet the students and present them with
a certificate in appreciation of their contribution to the competition. All
students, their families, and all art teachers are invited to attend the
reception.

The winning piece of artwork is sent to Washington, DC to represent Ohio's
First Congressional District in the National Art Competition. The artist and
his/her family are invited to attend a national competition recognizing
winning artists from all over the country, which is usually held in late
June. The artwork will hang in the Cannon Tunnel for one year. Second and
third place entries will be displayed in the Congressman's official office
for a period of one year (with artist approval).

Every high school in the First Congressional District will receive an
invitation to participate in the local competition. This is a terrific
opportunity to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of the high
school students in the First District.
