Finally I went to look up the print I remember by French artist
Honore Daumier.
It is called (English translation )"Nadar elevating photography to the
height of art." Nadar was a famous early photographer who made a
celebrated ascent in a balloon over Paris in 1856 and took extraordinary
aerial photographs of the city. Of course, Daumier, being a master of
caricature, puts a real comic twist to the event.
This brings to mind how neglected prints and printmakers are in the
world of study units and reproductions. A series on Daumier, Durer,
Kollwitz and other masters of printmaking past and present would be most
welcome.
