We have used all sorts of found objects - Christmas tree lights, feathers,
beads from old jewelry, plastic lids cut into shapes, marbles - anything -

Two things I would say - use fishing swivels in the piece and work from
the bottom up -

we usually make a group one when we start - study the physics of
balances - each person makes a hanging piece threaded on wire(with youngers
we may use pipe cleaners) - maybe 12 inches or so - (three large beads and
twisted wire - a plastic lid cut - a wrapped marble - and partners with
another student. they twist the wire onto the ends of bamboo skewers and
balance on their finger to find the center of gravity - mark it - add a wire
hanger - find another group and work with them in the same way until we
start to put the 'arms' together... can end up to be 4 to 6 ft... when each
child works on their own and we have to store - we hang from the ceiling...
