I believe the wax is used to resist glaze so that you do not have to clean the bottom of the pot....however with students I would still use kiln wash as drips and small areas of glaze can remain and must be wiped off .

Has anyone heard of using wax to coat the bottom of bisque fired pieces
before glaze firing instead of coating the shelves with kiln wash? How
is this done?
