A friend of mine always teaches calligraphy at Christmas time.
She goes thought he basics and then splits up the poem "The
night Before Christmas" equally between her students. I can't
remember what level she did this with but Probably Art 1 and 2.
The students worked on a large roll of butcher paper. They had to
make 3 or 4 inch lines with a pencil to use as a guide. Once they
were all done writing their part of the poem they pieced them
together, added holly leaf decorations and made a scroll looking
top and bottom. Then they hung it up in the cafeteria. It has
become a yearly tradition for the school and everyone looks forward
to it.
For the lefty's - I think I would try to teach them using a calligraphy
marker at first until they get the hang of it and then transfer them to
the pen and ink. Less mess at first and they'll eventually learn to
hold up their wrist.
