I ordered on of the 'treasure Chests of Wood" things from an art catalog...
came with an assortment of wood turning seconds - like furniture slats,
chair legs, etc....
The kids painted them like insect bodies (folk art/ bright colors/ dots) -
we drilled holes in them and they threaded wire through them for wings (some
threaded beads onto the wires)... threaded beads onto nails and attached
to the head for antennae. Added one more hole in the body for a piece of
coat hanger wire and placed them in potted plants in the halls - hung some
from the ceiling. I just bought a bunch of close-out wood turnings
Can you plan with the science teacher and make mechanical bugs out of
cardboard and scrap wire? Or any found object? Simple crank toys? The
kids have fun with those -
At an art fair in the fall I saw a woman (she was best of show) that made a
core insect/bug body and then wrapped with strips of cloth (she used the
fancy fabrics - lame (sp) and so on) - seems like they had wire wings that
had a thin fabric attached (gossamer wings?)
