I've done some bug things, mostly with middle school people. Here are a few of them:

~Sketchbook assignment - collect a few bugs, and study them carefully. Draw them. Repeat drawing them in different positions, overlapping many times, filling the page until it looks like a swarm of bugs.

~Study a real bug with a magnifying glass. Make a series of enlarged bug drawings using bamboo brushes with sumi ink. Each bug should fill one piece of 18 x 24 paper. Work rapidly and expressively. Draw different views.

~Draw a realistic illustration of a bug from direct observation on scratchboard, using hatching and cross hatching.

~Make large paper mache bugs on wire and newspaper armatures.

~Do a large bug mural, painting a parade of 5 and 6 foot long bugs going down the hall. I haven't done this, but thought it could be fun.

Good luck, Mark
