I'm checking in with the unknown person on the who wondered how cutting
strips with a paper shredder would work out for quilling. Fantastic! Just
the right size and you can get a whole lot of quick strips this way with any
colored construction paper OR white drawing paper.
I've been making a couple of samples before beginning to teach it for the
first time to my middle schoolers...mainly 7/8 graders. I'm not sure how it
will go over but I'm enthusiastic about it and those who have seen the
samples are eager. Got a couple of weeks before I can start it though.
Anyway.....if anyone is thinking about doing a quilling lesson, may I
suggest you get (or make) a quilling tool. I ordered some from NASCO (who
seems to be the only one around who still carries quilling supplies). When I
got them I had a big chuckle because they are so easy to make.
Quilling tool: Cut some 1/4" dowels about 4-5 inches. Buy some tapestry
needles sizes 18-20. Plung, hammer, push the points into the dowel end and
glue with white glue. On the outside end cut off about 1/4 of the needle
eye. This will allow the needle to have a little "pitchfork" like shape
where the quilling paper can slip into and you can roll the strip. This way
you can make about 8 tools for $1.50. Toodle-loo.....Bunki
