Re: Ohio changes in standards -- A national trend?

This message is very unfortunate. I am coming from a school system in
Florida that does not support the arts within the high school. I was looking
foward to moving back to the columbus area in a few months. The school I am
at now does not require art. It has become a dumping ground and students,
parents and faculty members do not respect us. I have to constantly fight to
keep the program alive and keep the students motivated. I consistently hear
the counselors telling students they do not need art and that it will not
effect their gpa for merit scholarships. Parents in conferences always say I
don't care about their art grade. This year I intergrated economics into all
facets of my art program and focused on teaching art careers so students and
the administrators realize how important creativity and design is to the
world. Why do we have to constantly prove ourselves. I thought we had
finally overcome this battle. I was at least hoping Ohio would remain
unchanged. Some one needs to fight this. I know I will as soon as I get
back. The world already has enough brain dead robots. The creative
individuals and critical thinkers of the world are decreasing in large
amounts. This is the most powerful quality of the human mind which
technology cannot replace.
Fight it Ohio! Trust me if you look at the large percentages of
unintelligent people in Florida it will change your mind. (They never
required visual art)

Concerned,
Melanie
