The first year we added advisement classes at our middle school we made
a huge wall of faces. I had lots of mat board scraps we cut into 2 1/2"
squares. Each advisement (home room) teacher got enough for their class,
plus a handout on basic facial proportions and some packs of colored
pencils ( an incentive to participate.) Each student drew a self
portrait, just head and shoulders, in colored pencil. Then we (me with
student council helpers and some other teachers) glued them all together
on sheets of mat board and assembled them into a big mural. It hung in
one of our main hallways for most of the year. It looked awesome and the
kids loved looking for themselves, their friends and teachers. Yes we
made each teacher do their portrait too. It was harder to encourage the
teachers to do theirs than any of the kids. One nice thing was the kids
response- no vandalism to the pictures at all- and we often get hit with
writing on the walls. I must credit a School Arts issue from a number of
years ago for giving me this idea- for all I know, it is one of you who
did this first!
