Michal,
Love your ideas for getting art into the community. One thing I used to do
was take about 4 students and their work and go give a little informative
rah-rah speech at the local Rotary Club (could also be Kiwansis or Elks or
similar). They were always excited to see what we were doing and it gave me
a chance to explain how art education is more than just "drawing pictures".
I tried to do this in the Spring and take along invitations (callligraphied
by one of my students) to our upcoming Art Show.
Also, I had my Art 4 students do an individual display at the Bank. They
were responsible for bringing a card table-designing a covering for
it-creating a sign with their name and mounting or matting 5 of their best
works plus some 3D. It stayed up a week and they went Monday to set it up
and the next Monday they went and took it down and another student set
theirs up. It was very popular with the public and did a lot to build
self-exteem and help these students feel valued (sports is big in our
community and students who excel are glorified-it was a good balance to
that.
