I stayed and would stay again at the Hotel Italia. It is on a second
floor of a building, not far from the train station. It is in a busy
part of town. If I had only a day in Rome I would do again what I
enjoyed most: walk (a loooon walk) over the river to Rome's "left
bank" and "Village" (as in Greenwich). Trastevere. I would eat in one
of the restaurants over there. When in Italy, always look for
an "Osteria." They seem to have the best food at the fairest prices.
It is something between a cafe and a restaurant, not so formal. I had
a delicious whole fish and some pasta with truffles with a bottle of
table wine. I had dessert and the whole thing came to about $25.00 In
Europe I generally eat my big meal at lunch. I travel alone and don't
always feel great about going out for a late dinner. The hotel has a
little dining room and breakfast is provided as part of your stay.
One night I was hungry and the night porter made me a pannini and
brought it to me hot, with a Coke. The hotel has a book for guests to
write in, and you may find my entry. It was $40 a night three years
ago. Jane in Brooklyn
