Dear all,
I am a teacher of art and craft to adults in community education in England. At the
moment I specialise in teaching adults with learning difficulties and or disabilities. In
the past, I have taught art and craft to a more mainstream audience, usually with a
view to them gaining certification for their work. I have been trying for some time
now, to branch out into teaching leisure classes to the latter audience. In the past the
costs of putting on such courses have been very high and have served as a stumbling
block in terms of getting students to undertake classes
However, next academic year (September onwards) the funding situation is changing.
This means that community education will be able to offer leisure classes at a much
cheaper rate. In the light of these changes, my boss has asked me to put together a
proposal for a leisure based art and craft club at the local community college where I
work. If I pull it together successfully, I will gain promotion.
Her idea is to run some kind of scheme whereby adults can have a taste of various
crafts. The classes could run either evenings or daytime or both.(each class lasts
approximately two hours) We could run them in four week blocks sampling different
areas in each block. If any one area proves popular, we will then consider running
longer term classes in them. We are considering employing experts in a range of
disciplines. If recruitment is successful, I will oversee the smooth running of the
whole thing in addition to teaching some classes myself.
Obviously, I have many ideas of my own about what could be offered in these classes,
but of course, many heads are better than one and I am writing to you to ask you if
you could spare the time to send in a wish list of the kind of classes that you might
like to undertake yourselves either as teachers or students. If anyone has any
experience of anything like this I would be grateful for any input, advice, suggested
subject areas and the like.
I am really excited about this opportunity and thank you in anticipation of any help or
advice that you may be able to offer me!
Gratefully
Margaret
