Charcoal Dust and Cartoons

We will be creating frescoes in a 7th grade class. As a first step, students
will draw cartoons of their designs. Then they will punch holes in the
outline of it, and then try to transfer the design to the plaster by tapping a
bag of charcoal dust over the holes. This would be the authentic process
followed by Michelangelo, however, I can't think of a source of charcoal dust.

My question is: Can you suggest something that will simulate the effect of
charcoal dust and, is readily available? If you have any ideas, I would love
to hear them. Thanks, Vita
