I use a lesson first introduce by an intern very interested in gardens and
outside spaces. We worked on a lesson called the Thresholds from outside to
inside.... we talk about the "Gates of Paradise" and other entrances and
passages that guide the traveler from one space to another. An important
aspect is how the entrance or passage relates to the outside environment as
well as the inside environment. Sometimes it serves as a major transitional
space like the passage from the middle ages to the Renaissance other times it
is less dramatic and more of a blend. What do doorways, entrances, and
thresholds tell us about the space we are leaving and the one we are entering.
I recently went to Bali and every village had an entrance and an exit, it was
a nice landmark and quite unique to the village.
