I run a Resources centre for our Education Department for which we are carrying out a feasibility study to examine whether we should open to various members of the public. My collection has books and journals on museology and education as well as design, decorative art and fine art (that is the collection of our museum); slides for lecturers on the same subjects; an archive of photographs and publications of departmental activities; a stand alone computer with Internet access and installation of learning based CD ROMS; videos and audio tapes.
My manager envisaged that teachers and higher education tutors as well as students of education and museology could use the centre to support their work or studies. Parents with children's school projects of relevance to the museum could research here and take away photocopies; teachers planning visits could find out about displays and objects using books & teachers packs from the V&A and other museums internationally; students could read the theory and catch up on current awareness with journals and so on.
I haven't found anything in the UK yet. Does anyone else in USA run something similar with some or all or the above?
If they do, could they contact:
