Hi Julie --
I just got done having my 5th graders draw portraits of classical composers
-- our music teacher has some large portraits which the kids could copy
from if they wanted but I also stressed the idea that they should listen to
the representative music of that composer and try to incorporate the feel
of the music into their work -- for example, many kids had Beethoven
looking rather wild and unkempt (and a few used a Picasso style in
portraying Beethoven, which was wild!). Some thought Bach's wig looked
kind of like his music sounds -- repetitive rolls, over and over.... I
integrated proper facial proportion into the lesson also as well as
expressive use of colors and textures so it was a neat whole arts project
