Art Honors Class...Need suggestions!

I will be teaching a Middle School Art Honors Class next year and am in the
process of developing the curriculum. I am at a loss on how to select the
students for it. I do not want to do it by class grades because I will have
too many kids. I want to keep the enrollment small and workable. What is a
good size class?
1. What measurement can I use to select students who can keep up with a more
rigorous curriculum?
2.What suggestions do you have to develop a curriculum for advanced students.
(I do not have a kiln nor computer (yet).
3.I would like to use a portfolio measurement for grading, where the student
also does self-evaluation. Any ideas? Or, do you have other ideas for
grading?
4. Any tried and true lesson plans?
5. What have you done with Honors Art that works?
