round reed

I have a lot of round reed and need advice for how I can use it. I
have made free form sculptures and baskets from it before, but I used
waxed thread to connect it. I do not have the waxed cord and do not
have the $ to buy it. I would like to do a reed frame and cover it
with paper, but does anyone know of a cheap and effective replacement
twine? Thank you, C
