students (especially secondary students) with art history. My approach
has always been to integrate as much the art history into my studio
classes.(i.e. in my grade 10 program after a unit on the Roman period
students work on clay portrait busts). However with my senior grades
the emphasis shifts to portfolio related studio activities with history
period styles and individual artists a part of our discussion. My
strategy is to assign readings, question assignments, note taking and
slide analysis. I find that although I am covering the course material,
the students on the average (of course there are some that are keen )
are bored and very rarely are prepared for any type of discussion based
on their readings and question assignments. They would rather delay
having art history and come up with all kinds of excuses for not being
prepared. I generally devote one full 80 minute period to art history
