Today in my beginning painting and drawing class we looked at the Superrealism
paintings of Audrey Flack. I asked the students to describe what they saw.
We had the work Marilyn up. They of course jumped right to interpretation.
After a lively discussion, I asked what media the work was in. Most voted it
was a photograph. I asked what size they figured about 8X10". They were
amazed to find out it is a painting and that is his huge (about 80 inches).
The symbols in the work were discussed and then we looked at more of her
vanitas series including an autobiographical stilllife entitled "Queen". We
discussed what the implications of size were in these pieces.
It was great. Most agreed, that they would seem quite ordinary if painted
small or the normal size.
