I just made "shaker cans" with my 2nd graders today using Art Paste and
newspaper strips. This integrates with the classroom teachers' unit on
sound. They make a Homemade Band with various instruments. We put about 1/4
cup of beans or rice in empty soda cans, tape the opening and cover with 2
layers of strips. Next week we will paint them a solid color and then do some
overpainting using brushes and/or sponges the following week. I have covered
the cans w/ pariscraft in the past. They have also made drums using a cut
balloon over a coffeecan. (Use an elastic to seal it). These can be decorated
with paper, yarn, beads and feathers. Empty film containers can also be used
to make mini shakers. Decorate with sticker paper or colored tape.
