I started a lesson with my sixth graders last week. The objectives of the
lesson were: fragmentation, symplification, and geometric shapes.
Introduced works by Picasso, discussed the movement/style of cubism, and
then had the students draw a primarily contour line drawing of a guitar I
have in my room.
Next I had the students fragment their picture by, drawing 2 diagonal lines
from top to bottom of the page (anywhere they wanted). Next, they drew two
more lines that started from each of the previous 2 diagonal lines, and
went off the edge of the paper. Next they had to draw a triangle, using
one of the existing lines as a side, a square, using one of the existing
lines as a side, and finally an arc. Next I had them erase some of the
lines that were too close together (would be difficult to paint inside the
tiny existing fragmented shape).
This coming week we will be painting. The objectives will be contrast --
light/dark, and warm/cool, as well as brush control. (Painting hard edges
is something they need practice in).
I choose not to use portraits because we have done masks, self portraits
from a mirror, and profiles of one another -- figured the kids needed a
break from the face! Also, this age level is soooo into realism, and I
wanted them to view the subject matter (guitar) in a new and abstract way.
