OBJECTIVE: CUBISM , OFTEN SHOWS A PROFILE AND FULL FACE VIEW
SIMULTANEOUSLY, SUGGESTING THE 4TH DIMENSION, TIME
SKILLS:
USE TEMPERA TO CREATE A CUBIST PORTRAIT
Resources:
pictures or slides of "Girl Before a Mirror or Portrait of dora Maar
quotation: A picture is not thought out and settled beforehand.
While it is being done it changes as one's thoughts
change. And when it is finished, it still goes on changing,
according to the state of mind of whoever is looking at it."
Background of Artist
Project:
1. Draw 2 heads: full face and an exaggerated side-view, profile, on
paper
2. Cut out the profile and place over the front view for a draft of
the final picture
3. Make a composition showing the combined faces and sketch other
elements of a half-length portrait
4. Paint: wipe brushes on paint rags rather than changing color so
as not to dilute tempera.
5.After drying overpaint using fine brushes to create patterns and
details in background, clothes etc, outlining to enhance the shapes.
This is a sure-fire project!!! Good luck. I have varied it often
depending on the ability and time constraints. Sometimes we skip the
rough draft and paint right over the 2 superimposed heads.
