I teach in a district with an excellent elementary art program ( I teach
middle school) and I can definitely see the effects of a good elementary art
education on the students who come through my doors. They know how to talk and
write about art as well as how to use art vocabulary and to approach art with
an "I can do it" attitude. I can usually spot newcomers who have had no elem.
art (like those who come back to the midwest from California) because they
seem starved for art. They do catch up quickly when the expectations are high
and often are my most enthusiastic students. I think they see what they've
been missing and crave it! In some cases, though, they are afraid of doing
something wrong or want to be shown the "right" way to do something....would
prefer to have someone else do their problem solving!
Face it, we all have to take what we get...but I certainly value the teaching
that has come before those kids walk in my doors.
