I have to agree with Bunki on this subject. Otherwise I will continue to be
required to deal with ninth grade students who argue that "it has to have a
sun!", "those are birds", and "I always mark off the four corners." They have
come all the way through elementary and middle school and NO ONE has taught
them to deal with composition in a mature manner. Apparently the design
principles are merely something one memorizes. I suspect (and this will get me
blasted) that many of their former teachers only have the design principles
memorized themselves and think that when they have students memorize them they
are teaching them. To be honest most of my students had never heard of the
design principles. Maybe their former teachers do not want to compete with the
colleges or that is something else that can wait till college.
When do we start to teach art?
