I have been reading and enjoying (for the most part) the "artsednet" for a month. As an artist and educator who also happens to be disabled, I am appalled at the discussion of "teaching disabled artists". The people who purchase my clothing (hand painting silk) and my liturgical art (hand painted silk clergy stoles and paraments) have no idea I am disabled. They buy my work because it is art. My 'kids', eighth grade, treat me as they treat any other teacher in this school-unfortunately.
Think!!!! Teach an artist for his or her art. Don't teach an artist for the color of their skin, for their asbility to hear, for their ability to walk or speak! We will never get over the need for the Americans with Disabilities Act until the world can see people instead of disabilities. mlh
