I write my own units also. Sometimes we might focus on a certain
element of art, such as color, line, or texture. Another time, it may
be on a certain culture or country.

One unit that I love to do with first grade is "Our Trip Around the
World". We focus on where we are from on a large world map. From there
we use our imagination and travel to various points in the world. We
study the culture, people, and arts and crafts of that area. Then we
complete an art project related to that area. In our travels, we have
studied Chinese dragons and the Chinese New Year, Australia and the
Great Barrier Reef, Africa and ceremonial masks, and many others. The
children love it and by the end of the unit, they can point on a map and
show you where we are from and places we have traveled.
