Regarding a solution for sending artwork home...

Jack Richeson and Company make a nifty cardboard folding portfolio that
will hold work up to 22x30. If your local art materials retailer
doesn't carry it, ask them to bring a few in. They're very economical
(a few bucks) and will hold up for a semester or two. You can even get
them printed with a school logo, if you like.
